What am I able to post on The City?
The City is designed to help us as church stay connected and grow in community. The City is a platform that helps you to better engage/interact with people from NCC! You’ll know who to pray for and post how people can pray for you, find service opportunities at NCC, get connected to a group as well as stay in the loop with all that is going on at NCC!
Is The City private?
Yes, it is! The only people who can see your City account are other people from The North Canton Chapel who also use The City. No one can search your name and find your City account. On top of that, you have complete control over who can and cannot see your contact information. Click here and here to learn how to adjust your privacy settings. No one will ever sell the information you share via The City. The City is owned by a company named ACS Technologies which specializes in creating software solutions for local churches. The North Canton Chapel on The City is overseen by a Core team of NCC staff members (Carol Bagley, Judy McClintock, Jerry Nuzum, Bob Roberts, Dave Short) and is configured only for our use. Pastors and staff members do not have unlimited access to the content posted on The City. No one does. The only people who can see content posted within a group are the people who are a part of the group. Any prayer requests or needs that you share within your group that you are connected with or other groups are only accessible to the members of that group, unless you specifically choose to share them with other friends or NCC Main Campus Group.
What does The City do that other social networks can't?
While The City is primarily a communication tool, it is not only a communication tool. It also allows the people of the North Canton Chapel on The City to do things like meet other people from around NCC, put a name with a face from someone you’ve connected with at NCC, find volunteer opportunities based on their skills, share prayer requests and allow others to engage in prayer with you, as well as simply the communication within a group that you are in. Because The City is just for NCC, it allows us to do some powerful things that we simply could not do using other social networks.
How is The City different from other social networks, like Facebook?
Typically, interaction on social networks starts and stops online. You post a picture of your lunch, your friends like and comment on it, and that’s that. This is a common objection that people have to social media, because it creates a false sense of connection by trying to replace real life interaction with a post, comment, or like. The City, on the other hand, is specifically designed to facilitate community and mission amongst actual groups of people within the church who meet, work, and pray together in real life. Simply put, we do not depend on The City to create a sense of digital community and mission, rather, we use it as a digital tool to help facilitate the real life community and mission that we are already doing.
Why is the City asking me to "be friends" with others? Why should I be friends with someone on The City?
The concept of friends in The City is a little different than in other social networks. Because The City is about building church community through groups, making friends is a secondary point of connection designed to help you stay in touch with people who may not be in your current groups.
- Once you add someone as a friend, they can see your status updates in their news feed, and you can see theirs.
- You can allow your friends to see private contact information, like address and phone number, that others can’t see.
- You can also share posts with your friends.
What about people who do not have a computer?
If you do not have a computer (or if you are not interested in using one), you unfortunately will not be able to use The City. The most common concern that people are voicing when they ask this question is that they are worried that a City account would be too difficult to use and keep up with on a regular basis. If that’s you, here is some great news… you do not need to be a computer wiz to use The City! The only thing you need to use The City is an email address and access to a computer. That’s it. We will all use The City differently. We completely understand that. Actually, that is one of the things we like most about The City; it allows people to use their account to whatever extent they feel comfortable. For example, if you would like to use The City just so that you can receive emails from the groups you’re involved in (and nothing more) you can absolutely do that! The City is designed to help our church be a community on mission. We understand that not everyone will use The City to the same extent, and we want to do everything we can to help you use it in a way that suits your needs.
